St. Patrick’s Day is near.

I always look forward to St. Patrick’s Day for many reasons.   From a seasonal standpoint it is the gateway day to the first day of Spring.   I will be planting my tomato, onion, pepper, cabbage and annual flower seeds soon.   I look forward to listening to the Irish music we play in the cafe all day that day.  I look forward to making some classic Irish themed food such as Irish Soda bread,  Baileys cheesecakes, festive shamrock sugar cookies and Guinness brown bread among other things.  The kitchen will be making braised corned beef marinated in stout and sautéed onions along with boiled cabbage and carrots and murphys. While I know that isn’t technically Irish it is still fun to eat on St. Patricks!  I know it will be a laid back fun day with plenty of good craic.  My surname might be the English name Umpleby but my Mother’s maiden name is Dugan so there is Irish in my blood as well.  Another reason for looking forward to this day!

So let the countdown begin….  I’ll start assembling the ingredients…..

Erin go bragh!

Mardi Gras is this Tuesday! That means Doughnuts!

Mardi Gras is this Tuesday, the 28th!  And in keeping with our annual tradition,  we will be making doughnuts!   We’ll have glazed, crullers, Boston creams and maybe some other kinds as well.  There will be gumbo for lunch and zydeco music playing all day!   Make Umpleby’s your morning stop on Tuesday and get a good base of carbs in your stomach if you plan on setting out and indulging in the traditional Mardi Gras beverages that we don’t sell.

Laissez les bon temps rouler!!!
