Another Christmas Cookie is coming on line – The Madeleine

IMG_2607-300x219Tomorrow the Madeleine returns!  From the cookie chronicles last year: The first thing to note about this great French sponge cake is its shape.  Proust describes it as “a seashell cake so strictly pleated outside and sensual inside”.   The origin of this delicious confection dates back to as early as 1755  in the French town of Commercy.   It is said that the duke while visiting the town was very taken by a cake made by a  peasant girl named Madeleine.  This started the fashion of calling these cakes by that name as they were then called by the duke.

Do you really want to support this chain?

I am of two minds posting this article.  One is that whatever I can do to educate people on how important it is to support local businesses is something that should be done without hesitation.  The other is that I don’t want to give this particular chain any more attention than it deserves and that anything I post on this website is, in a sense, preaching to the choir.  The former won out so I am posting this article in the NYT today that reports the unsavory business practices in the UK of a certain coffee shop chain.
